Planning Commission Wants Transit Hub Vision “On City of Springfield’s Radar”

The joint planning body for the City of Springfield and Sangamon County is spreading the word about its plan for a multi-purpose transportation hub along the 10th Street Rail Corridor.

The proposed 8-block “Transit Oriented Development” just east of the Prairie Capital Convention Center would bring rail and bus terminals together with restaurants, shops, apartment units, day care facilities and a police substation.

Springfield Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission Director Norm Sims says the plan would offer a great deal to residents who desire a lifestyle centered around public transit.

“Residential uses and commercial uses of different types, office space as well as retail, all on one site. That dynamism that’s brought together there makes it work. People who use public transportation like to live, work, shop and even play in the area where the transit itself is located.”

Local leaders still await confirmation from federal and state transportation officials about the location of high speed rail traffic through Springfield.

Planners say they want their ideas for the 10th street hub “on the radar” of the city and county as they consider the future of public transit in Springfield.
