Sangamon County Sheriff Neil Williamson announced today he will not run for re-election. He still has a year and a half left in his term. He is the longest serving sheriff in the county – he’ll have 20 years under his belt when he steps down. Williamson, a Republican, says his greatest achievements are the hiring decisions he’s made.
WILLIAMSON: “I owe a lot of debt of gratitude to the voters and the thousands of supporters that have helped me through the years get elected and helped me in various ways. And I’m leaving the department in great hands.”
Jack Campbell, the county’s Undersheriff is making an announcement later this afternoon, likely that he will run for the office. Williamson says he would endorse Campbell. As for his own political future, Williamson says as of yet he has no plans to run for another political position.
