Court Could Be Months Away From Retiree Health Decision

It will likely be September before the Illinois Supreme Court hears a lawsuit over imposingcourt health-insurance premiums on retired state government workers.
The high court has a term in May. But court spokesman Joe Tybor says the time allotted for both sides to file written briefs of their cases would probably push oral arguments into September.
The court agreed Thursday to take a direct appeal of four cases challenging a state law requiring retirees to pay premiums.
A Sangamon County judge dismissed the lawsuits last month. He ruled insurance is not a pension benefit protected by the Illinois Constitution. Lawyers for the plaintiffs and Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration agreed to seek direct appeal and skip the appellate court.
