House Takes Aim At Cell Phones Behind The Wheel

phoneThe Illinois House today once again voted to ban the use of cell phones while driving.
The legislation would prohibit holding a cell phone up to your ear while driving. But it would still be legal to use a speakerphone or headset, and to make calls to emergency personnel.

HARRIS
“There are elements of Big Brother in this bill. There’s no way that you can get around that.”

Rep. David Harris is a Republican from Arlington Heights. Many legislators echoed those concerns, and pointed out all the other dangerous things people do behind the wheel that would still be legal: eating, shaving, putting on makeup, yelling at their kids.
But Harris is actually a co-sponsor of the legislation. He says public safety outweighs other concerns.

HARRIS
“Our job is to try to make the roadways as safe as possible. It is known that distracted driving is unsafe.”

The measure passed 64-46 and now heads to the Senate. A similar proposal made it this far last year, but never became law.
