A pair of Illinois House Republicans are introducing measures they say will make it easier to track state spending. Chris Slaby reports.
One piece of legislation would expand the Illinois Transparency Portal, a website that shows how the state spends money.
The proposed expansion would add other taxing bodies, like cities and counties.
House Republican Leader Tom Cross, from Oswego, says there’s no easy way to do that research now.
CROSS: “We think this is a one-stop shop for taxpayers. They can check the state, they can check their school districts, their park districts, any unit of local government.”
Another measure would create a state board to review how taxes are collected and spent, and look at each taxing body’s debt.
A third proposal would require an analysis on all future taxing and spending legislation to see how it would affect Illinois’ debt.
