Foodbank Move Will Help With Storage

foodbankThe Central Illinois Foodbank announced recently it plans to move to the former Pepsi Bottling plant at 1937 East Cook Street.  The building will be remodeled, providing more space for storage.  That includes refrigeration of fresh fruit and vegetables.  Kaleigh Friend with the Foodbank says while the focus has been on providing those items to people in need, some donations have been sent elsewhere simply because the current facility lacks the room to keep it…

FRIEND ‘What that means is we would send it to the St. Louis area foodbank or the Eastern Illinois Foodbank, so that food does leave our 21 county area.  Our agencies are having more people come to them and say we need food assistance so, we are not doing justice to them by having to turn away food.  So this new facility is going to help us have more to offer to those agencies.”

Friend says the transition to the new location is expected next year.  The family that owned the facility donated it to the foodbank.   The operation has been located at 2000 E. Moffat Avenue for 25 years.
