It’s a holiday tradition for NPR, and this year the sardonic monologue that takes aim at department store Santas and their elves turns 20.
David Sedaris’ career as a writer and comedian was launched when he performed “Santaland Diaries” on NPR’s Morning Edition in 1992.
Since then his piece has been adapted for the stage and actor Jerry Johnson – who heads the Decatur Area Arts Council – will bring it to Central Illinois audiences this weekend and next.
Johnson joined Peter Gray on WUIS’ Morning Edition to discuss why he prefers to use Sedaris’ text to guide his performance rather than the NPR recording that airs annually:
