Senate Approves License Registration Fee To Fund State Parks

It will probably cost an extra two dollars to renew your license plate next year.  That sticker will also serve as your pass to all of Illinois’ state parks and recreation areas. Amanda Vinicky explains.

After seeing its budget cut in half over the past decade … the Department of Natural Resources says it’s left with roads, sewage treatment plants and roofs that “absolutely” need maintenance work.

That’s what the extra two dollars to renew your license plate will help pay for.

D-N-R had contemplated charging an admission fee, or having an annual pass.  But Director Marc Miller says this keeps parks more accessible.

MILLER: “DNR has a broad reach, not just state parks, not just hunting and fishing, but permitting, economic development, water resources.”

The measure would also allow DNR to create or increase other fees, like for a commercial fishing license and taking an ATV out on a trail.

The governor’s expected to sign the measure, which was just approved by the Senate.

I’m Amanda Vinicky.
