Springfield will have a children’s museum by 2014 if new plans for the Kidzeum come through. Rachael Thomson heads the board of directors for the Kidzeum. She says the museum, which would focus on personal health as well as health in the environment and community, would be a good fit for the downtown area. Previous plans would have had the location at Southwind Park. The board is hoping tax increment financing will be approved by the city and help fund the project with up to one million dollars. Thomson says a location downtown would add needed space.
THOMSON: “We’ll have larger areas so that we can have travelling exhibits on a quarterly basis to keep things fresh. We’ll have more opportunities to have educational rooms for things like birthday parties and educational programs.”
Thomson says fund-raising for the project will have to be increased with the new plans. The project will cost over 6 million dollars overall, an extra one million dollars than previously planned. Just over half of that has already been raised.
