Complaints Against Clinton Landfill

Champaign officials are trying a new tactic to delay or stop a proposed toxic-waste landfill in DeWitt County.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports ( ) that the city filed a complaint Friday with the Illinois Pollution Control Board claiming that Clinton Landfill never received county approval for a chemical-waste unit.
Landfill operators have applied for a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency permit to bury polychlorinated biphenyls _ a now-banned industrial chemical _ in part of the landfill.
Nearby municipalities oppose the plan because waste would be above part of an aquifer that provides drinking water to about 750,000 residents.
The county approved a municipal waste landfill in 2002. But Champaign’s attorneys say the company should have undergone another local review for a chemical-waste unit.
The landfill’s attorney didn’t immediately return a message Friday. (AP)
