State To Pay Former Death Row Inmate

Randy Steidl

A budget bill awaiting action by the Illinois House of Representatives includes $2.5 million to pay for a State Police settlement with a former death row inmate.
The state Senate on Wednesday passed the bill that includes money for Randy Steidl of Charleston. He and Herb Whitlock were convicted in the 1986 murders of a Paris couple and spent years in prison before a judge released them because of flawed evidence.
Steidl spent 17 years in prison including 12 on death row. He was released in 2004. A judge released Whitlock in 2008.
The State Police agreed to settle with Steidl last fall.
Steidl continues to pursue a lawsuit against the city of Paris and the prosecutor in his case. Whitlock has sued those defendants and the State Police. (AP)
