Milton Pulls Some Budget Cuts From Discussion

The Springfield District 186 Superintendent has pulled a list of budget cutting moves off the table… at least for now.  Dr. Walter Milton says a secondary list that became public created too much confusion and strong feelings.  The items listed for possible areas of savings included changes at Iles Middle School, cutting some extracurricular activities and more.
Milton says that list was never meant to be part of the current budget discussion.  He says removing it from consideration will allow the District to focus on putting together a budget for the next school year.  The revised budget plan still calls for closure of Feitshans Academy beginning in the fall.

Statement by Superintendent Dr. Walter Milton, Jr., Regarding Budget

“When the administration introduced the budget reduction recommendations for the 2012-13 school year, we also included considerations for future savings. Unfortunately, that secondary list has created too much confusion and too many strong feelings. As a result, I have decided to remove that list (including items regarding athletics and extracurricular activities, Iles Middle School, and bus transportation for magnet schools, which were never meant to be considered for the 2012-13 school year). This is so my administration and I, along with the School Board and the Springfield Public Schools community, can focus our attention on the task at hand — passing the most sensible budget we can for the coming fiscal year. Tough decisions are still ahead. But I ask for your patience and cooperation for the sake of our children as we work through these difficult economic times together. Please remember if we work together we will achieve outstanding results.”
