Regulator Blasts Gambling Plan, Lawmakers

The head of the Illinois Gaming Board says a major gambling bill would weaken oversight of the industry and its sponsors should be ashamed of themselves, if they even understand the legislation.     Aaron Jaffe told The Associated Press on Wednesday that lawmakers are rushing a bill to add five new casinos and allow slot machines at horse-racing tracks. He says it includes changes that “tremendously” weaken regulatory oversight of the gambling business.
Jaffe says most lawmakers, including its sponsors, probably don’t understand the bill. He says if the sponsors do understand the measure, “they should be ashamed of themselves.”
Jaffe, a former legislator himself, has often criticized the gambling bill, although usually not in such personal terms.
Lawmakers say they’ve added safeguards to avoid weakening regulation of the industry. (AP)
