Simmons Cancer Institute Marks First Year of Taking Patients

There were more than 20,000 visits to the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU in Springfield during its first year.

The facility serves patients from counties in central and southern Illinois. It’s also a place for research and doctors who specialize in 11 areas including cancers affecting the breast, head, neck, and prostate. The State of Illinois pays about $900,000 per year for utilities. When the facility opened, the state only pledged that support for the first year. John Godwin is the Associate Director of the Simmons Cancer Institute. He says the state will pitch in once again this year. After that, the facility will have to plead its case like thousands of other groups in Illinois…

The Institute features an open-area chemotherapy room where patients can socialize while they receive treatment.
