Doctor: Jackson Suffering From “Mood Disorder”

Experts say Jesse Jackson Jr. may be suffering from depression based on the information released by his doctor, who described the condition as a “mood disorder.”
Doctors said Wednesday the term typically refers to depression or bipolar disorder, which used to be known as manic depression.
Daniel Yohanna is the vice chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago.
He says depression is the more common of the two and can include symptoms like sleep disturbance, appetite problems, hopelessness and thoughts of suicide.
Treatment can involve anti-depressant medications and psychotherapy, and he says cure rates are high.
Mark Reinecke, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University, says treatment for either depression or bipolar disorder can take anywhere from weeks to years. (AP)
